Ellsworth Community College won the opening two sets versus Western Iowa Technical Community College. The hosts came storming back to force a fifth set and the match was eventually won by the Panthers 25-15, 25-13, 21-25, 19-25, 15-11.

In the opener, ECC took the lead and then with back-to-back kills from Juliana Nunez and Elsa Raga built a 13-9 advantage and never trailed again. Madi Hughston served up a pair of aces and the lead extended to 22-13. The visitors won the game on a Nunez hit (25-15).

Game two was all ECC. With Vera Hojnacki serving, the Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead and the Comets did not get on the scoreboard until they were already down 10-1. The lead would continue to swell to as many as 14-1. ECC finally ended it, 25-13, on a Raga kill.

The Panthers were on the verge of a 3-0 sweep, leading 14-10 in the third game. WIT came storming back and knotted the score at 15-15 and then took the lead. The hosts ended up winning the game 25-21 and used that momentum to take the fourth by a 25-19 decision and set up a fifth game.

The visitors led the entire fifth game. The two squads were knotted at 10-10 when a Nunez hit gave the Panthers the small lead. The advantage was 12-11 when Raga knocked down a kill. With Camylle Le Meur serving, Anthea Deweer recorded a block and Raga’s hit won it.

ECC will host NIACC (10-10, 2-4) on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m.
