On the road at two-win Marshalltown Community College, Ellsworth Community College was able to escape with four set win 25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 27-25.
The Tigers (2-12, 1-11) definitely gave ECC all they could handle. The opening game saw plenty of ties, with the final even score was at 25-25 on a Juliana Nunez kill. A service error and an MCC hit won the game for the hosts.
Set two was also close with plenty of even scores. Tied at 18-all, Vera Hojnacki went back to serve and the Panthers rattled off eight of the final 10 points, winning the set on an Anthea Deweer block (25-20).
ECC carried that momentum into the third game and built an 11-point lead on an Elsa Raga hit. The lead remained double digits as the Panthers won the game 25-15 on a Madi Hughston ace to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth game was similar to the first and once again took extra points to decide a winner. ECC found themselves down before going on a scoring spree. With Camylle Le Meur serving, the Panthers scored four in a row to get back into the set. A Deweer kill made it 25-25 and sent the sophomore middle back to serve.
Lauren Mauk made a diving dig in the stands to keep the ball alive and on the other side of the net MCC committed an error to bring up match point. Hughston knocked down a kill to with it and reverse the result of the first set – 27-25.
ECC will host Iowa Lakes Community College in the regular season finale and sophomore night on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
