On the road at Creston, Ellsworth Community College (13-12, 9-10) turned in a full team performance to defeated last-place Southwestern Community College 72-26. It was their second largest margin of victory this season.
The visitors led by 10 after the opening quarter, on top 22-12. It was the second period that ECC really gained traction and outscored the Spartans 22-3 to lead 44-15 at the break. The Panther defense continued to hold SWCC (4-23, 0-19) under double figures in the second half, leading 54-19 after three.
ECC recorded nine steals and 32 defensive rebounds, while the Spartans tallied just 16 boards. Similar to the Panthers situation earlier in the year, SWCC did not have a bench to rely on and were down to five players.
For the visitors, all nine players scored and contributed in some way. Three were in double figures, led by Yaiza Soriano Balaguer with 20 points and six rebounds. Addy Dennis added 13 points and Asia Beale had 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the winners.
The road to the end of the season is going to be a challenging one as ECC hosts No. 7 Kirkwood on Wednesday.
