| Title: | Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Backs |
Coach Chris Bonta brings over 15 years of coaching experience across the high school, collegiate, and professional levels, building a reputation as a proven defensive strategist, special teams expert, and program builder. His career reflects a consistent ability to elevate programs, develop players, and establish winning cultures.
Bonta began his coaching career in 2009 as the linebackers coach at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, California. He quickly moved into a co-defensive coordinator role at San Marcos High School, working under Hall of Fame coach John Robinson, where he helped develop a physical and disciplined defensive unit.
He broke into the college ranks at Rockford College in Illinois as a wide receivers coach, mentoring an All-American selection before returning to the high school level at Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California. As defensive coordinator, Bonta led the program to its first undefeated season in school history, producing a top-five defense in San Diego, capturing a league championship, and earning a playoff berth.
Bonta later returned to his alma mater, Carlsbad High School, serving as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator. His success there led to his first head coaching opportunity at Lakeside High School, where he orchestrated a turnaround for a program that had not won a game in multiple seasons, leading them to four victories. He then became head coach at Escondido Charter High School, where he helped initiate a cultural transformation that continues to impact the program today.
Continuing his defensive success, Bonta served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Vista High School, helping restore the program’s tradition of winning football. He then transitioned into full-time college coaching as the defensive coordinator at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois.
Bonta’s career also includes professional experience as the offensive line coach and special teams coordinator for the San Diego Strike Force of the Arena Football League. He returned to the junior college ranks as an outside linebackers coach at Navarro College before advancing to the Division I FCS level at Tarleton State University, where he worked under respected defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix as an assistant linebackers coach and defensive analyst.
He continued to build his collegiate résumé at Anderson University (IN) as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, followed by a role as defensive coordinator at Ellsworth Community College. Bonta then moved to the NCAA Division II level at Arkansas Tech University, working under head coach Roy Thompson and alongside defensive coordinator Frank Espy as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. During his tenure, his special teams unit led the nation with the No. 1-ranked punt team in Division II football.
Bonta currently serves as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Ellsworth Community College, where he continues to develop high-level defensive talent and implement aggressive, disciplined schemes.
In addition to his work in the United States, Bonta has gained valuable international coaching experience in Mexico. He has worked with LIJUFA and served as defensive coordinator for the TECOS Football Club, leading the team to an undefeated championship season while fielding the top-ranked defense in the country. He has also collaborated with a group of San Diego-based coaches as the defensive coordinator for Baja Fest, an elite event showcasing over 200 of the top players in Mexico.
Throughout his career, Bonta has demonstrated a commitment to player development, competitive excellence, and building strong team cultures — principles that continue to define his impact on every program he serves.
Off the field, Coach Bonta is a devoted husband and father. He has been married to his wife, Kim, for 26 years, and together they are the proud parents of three children: Victoria, Christopher, and Jeremiah.
