Freshman standout Jean Ngoma (197 lbs.) has been named Athlete of the Week through the ICCAC (Iowa Community College Athletic Conference), following a dominating performance at the prestigious Art Kraft Memorial Tournament.
Ngoma went a perfect 5–0 over the weekend, showcasing grit, technical prowess, and competitive toughness that belies his first-year status. His defining moment came in a marquee match against Indian Hills’ reigning national champion, Andrew Marquez. In a gripping 3–2 decision, Ngoma stayed composed and relentless, earning a hard-fought victory that propelled him into the tournament championship round. After advancing via injury default in the final, Ngoma claimed first place in his weight class with authority.
The achievement not only underscores Ngoma’s explosive potential but also serves as a bright spot in a challenging season for Ellsworth in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Through early conference competition, the Panthers have battled in a tough lineup and are continuing to develop consistency across the roster, gaining valuable experience week by week. iccac.prestosports.com
“Jean’s performance this past weekend speaks volumes about his work ethic and mindset,” said Head Coach Diorian Coleman, in his first season leading the ECC program. “He showed heart, discipline, and competitive courage that we strive for in this program. Big wins like this can change the trajectory for any wrestler, and Jean’s just getting started.”
Ngoma’s breakthrough victory over a nationally recognized competitor not only highlighted his individual talent but also energized his teammates and coaching staff alike. The Panthers are looking to carry that momentum into the rest of the season as they continue to compete in the ICCAC and build toward postseason goals.
“We’re proud of Jean’s accomplishments and his representation of Ellsworth Community College,” said Nate Forsyth, ECC Athletic Director. “This honor reflects his dedication and the strength of our wrestling program. It’s a testament to the hard work put in by Jean and by our entire team.”
Ngoma’s Athlete of the Week recognition is a well-deserved nod to a freshman who has quickly made his mark on the mat, and one whose future looks exceptionally bright.
